Waveney 2 Triathlon 2010 - 05 Sep 2010

Sunday 5th September saw some of the elite Rock Estate race team take part in the Waveney 2 triathlon, perfect weather conditions greeted the team for this ever popular event at Bungay. With a 400m pool swim 20k undulating bike route and a short but testing 3.2k run which consists of approximately 50 m of flat running and the rest up and down hills awaiting the team.

Jimbo Drake was competing in his first triathlon and put in a great opening performance with a 7.02 swim 35.10 bike and 14.14 run to give a total time of 56.26. 23rd place overall. Chris Drake was unable to match the blistering swim and run pace of Jimbo but did take 32 seconds out of Jimbos bike time to finish with a more than respectable time of 57.10 giving him 26th place overall.

Dale "phelps" Gowen must have done 2 swim legs with a time of 8.45 this is usually gaff's strongest discipline giving him a good advantage over less trained swimmers but on the day he must have been slightly disappointed with this time, he did make up enough time on the bike and run to finish under the hour with a total time of 59.10.

Tim "ironman" Earl put in a good performance to finish in 15th position overall with a time of 55.08 good run and bike times were achieved on the day and Tim was heard to ask if he could complete the course another 10 times to make it worth his while getting out of bed at that time in the morning.

Mark Drake and Liam Gentry who started in the same wave along with Jimbo both had a good race achieving PB's on this course, Mark who was not confident of performing well before the start achieved an unstartling swim time of 6.44 but produced the 3rd quickest bike split of 31.54 and 3rd quickest run time of 13.01 giving a total time of 51.39 clinching 3rd place overall and the last place on the podium by just 1 second. Liam swam well and was enjoying himself so much in the pool he decided to do 2 extra lengths this caused him to exit the pool only seconds ahead of mark fortunately in true sporting spirit the eventual winner of the event Oliver Milk had been watching and timed liam's swim he informed the judges and a correction was made, (bloody nice bloke, well done!!) Liam then set off on his trusty steed to complete the bike course in 29.17 (2 mins.37 seconds ahead of Drake) then onto the run and a competitive time of 13.15 Liam's impressive total time of 48.22 ensured 2nd overall.

Oliver Milk was the clear winner on the day with a very impressive time of 46.03 this ensures the Rock Estate team have a clear goal to focus the oncoming winter training on. We must all train hard and race harder to try and catch up with an ever reducing time to achieve top places in the local events and work towards National recognition and domination!!!

Eastern Region Relay Championships Sunday 11th July 2010. - 11 Jul 2010

The Rock Estate sent a 3 man team to compete in the Eastern region relay championships at Gosfield lake in Essex. The event consisted of each competitor completing a 750m open water swim, 20K bike and a 5K cross country run, all done in relay fashion using the timing chip as the baton. Chris Drake, Liam Gentry and Mark Drake were taking part and raced in this order with Chris starting the swim leg first in only his second tri and his first open water swim event, the boys were thrown a bit of a curve ball at the briefing when they were informed that due to the water temperature being above 22 degrees wetsuits were banned, this was not such an issue for Liam as he is a proficient swimmer and can even go into open water without armbands!! but on this bombshell both Chris and Mark both felt the need to visit the portaloos to relieve a bit of pre race tension.

The swim leg was completed by the team without any serious issues although Chris did look a bit greener than the water on completion of his leg. Liam excelled with a time of 11.46 mins only about a minute off the top times of the day.
The bike section was reasonably straight forward apart from a section of road works where we had to dismount and run along the pavement for about 50m before re-mounting, a few hills and a reasonable head wind half way round played to our favor but unfortunately Liam received a 2 min time penalty for crossing a white line in his eagerness to get away from a crowded start, a somewhat petty rule but that's racing!!

Our target for the day was to try and keep up with the Tri Anglia Vet's team, after the swim section we were some 7 mins 30 seconds down on them. After the bike we had pulled back about 2 mins including our 2 min penalty.

The run was mostly out across the fields and tracks behind the lake with a short section on pavements, Chris put in a great time of 21.45 to with Liam running an equally impressive 21.20, Mark continued to show good running form putting in a 20.05. We were only 29 seconds behind the Tri Anglia team across the finish line but then had our penalty added to this. We finished in 21st place overall out of 115 starting teams.

Next year we will be back to compete again but be better prepared, faster and stronger. This was an excellent event and we all had a great day out, all topped off with a couple of cold beers in the evening, next year the Rock Estate should consider entering more teams to enjoy a cracking days racing at a very spectator friendly event and location.

Fritton Aquathlon Series 2010 Race 3 - 08 Jul 2010

Seven Rock Estaters entered the third race in the Fritton Aquathlon series on Thursday 8th July 2010. This included Steve Barber and Jimbo Drake who were in their first competitive multisport event.
The racing was fast and furious with Gareth Walker of Tri-Anglia first out of the swim closely followed by Mark Nowell and Paul Pester. Halfway round lap two the leader was Mark Nowell of Tri-Anglia. Mark Drake of Rock Estate was powering round the run after coming out of transition in 15th place and was closing in on Mark Nowell as the finish line came into sight. Mark Nowell was able to hold on to the lead achieving his first win of the series by just 4 seconds with Mark Drake, cheered to the finish line by the Rock Estate crew, finishing in second place. Liam Gentry finished in 4th, Tim Earl in 12th, Lee Bircham in 18th, Dale Gowen in 23rd, Steve Barber in 27th and Jimbo Drake in 35th.

Norwich Triathlon 2010 - 04 Jul 2010

On Sunday 4th July, 3 of the Rock estate team were competing in the Norwich triathlon events. The weather was a bit too good with bright sunshine and about 26 degree temperatures. Dale Gowen was competing in the Sprint event consisting of a 750m open water swim, a 20K undulating bike ride. This was supposed to be followed by a 5k run. The general consensus from competitors was that the run course was longer than advertised, it also included a steep climb and descent through the woods which upset the pacing. Dale put in a determined effort after a slight fault at the start of the swim when the safety crew nearly pulled him out because they thought he was drowning. This is now a common part of Gaff's swim where he forgets he can't breath through his nose while wearing a nose clip!! Once into his rhythm Gaff stormed the race to finish 6th overall and win his age group (group H.1 anyone born between 9-10am on 15th Feb). His total time was 1hr 17mins 32seconds, a good effort and good result.

Richard Smith and Mark Drake were competing in the Olympic distance event which also involved a course change from last year. Richard was competing in his first Olympic distance event and completed the tough course in an admirable 2hr 32m 03s, with split times of 30.47 for the 1500m swim, 1.06.36 for the 39K bike and 53.31 for the run which was estimated to be around 7 miles instead of the normal 6.2. With a bit more pacing experience we are sure to see faster times from Richard in future events. Mark, now competing in his 3rd Olympic distance event, was very pleased to complete the course in 2hr 20m 01s. A slower time than last year but finishing in 10th place overall a good result. He was heard to offer a vote of thanks to his wife for pushing him out of the door every night to train even though he didn't want to go!! The bike time was much better and perhaps the training is now starting to pay off.

A great event again, even with depleted Rock estate team numbers competing, maybe next year we can convince a few more to take the plunge and have a go! .

Norwich 100 Bike Ride 2010 - 06 Jun 2010

Gary Nichols and his wing man Liam Gentry rode in the Norwich 100 bike ride today. Gary, fresh from his time trial debut last Thursday, put in a superb performance completing the 100 mile ride in 4hr 49m, averaging over 20 mph. Relaxing at a BBQ after the event, Liam was quoted as saying 'that was an awesome ride by Gary, he was one of the 20 strongest riders in the whole field'. Some praise indeed!

Fritton Lake Triathlon 2010 - 29 May 2010

The Rock Estate was represented by four members at the Fritton Lake Triathlon weekend.
In wet conditions, the boys all put in excellent performances. Liam Gentry made the podium in the sprint race finishing 3rd. Mark Drake is his second standard distance triathlon put in a good performance coming 17th. The super-sprint was keenly contested by Lee Bircham and Dale Gowen. There are rumours that Michael Phelps did Gaff's swim as he posted a world record open water 400m time of 3m 51s! Gaff strongly disputes this and was quoted as saying "my swimming has been improving lately!" However, timing difficulties apart, both finished in the top 13.

Holmwood House Junior Triathlon - 16 May 2010

Rock Estate's Joe Drake attended the Holmwood House Triathlon on Sunday 16th May. He was racing in the tristar 1 category for 9-10 year olds amongst a field of 16 other athletes. There were a total of about 120 athletes across all the categories, and Joe had to complete a 120m swim, 2000m bike and a 1200m run. There were 2 waves of boys racing so Joe was effectively racing against the clock. In his heat he was 2nd out of the water and then took the lead early on in the bike leg and maintained a good pace to the end. When the final results were in Joe had finished in second place overall in a time of 16.44 only missing the top spot by 2 seconds.
Happy with the result and a very enjoyable, well organized event, Joe will now focus his training to improve in future events this season. The next event being the North Norfolk Junior Tri on 12th June.

East Coast Triathlon - 18 Apr 2010

The East Coast Tri took place on Sunday 18th April. This was a super sprint distance event consisting of a 250m swim, 16km bike, and 3km run. Excellent weather on the day made for a well organized, enjoyable first local event of the season.

4 Rock Estate team members took part and all produced good times. Mark Burns, (who has now unknowingly achieved affiliate membership status!!) finished in 29th place out of the 127 finishers with a time of 53.38. Chris Knights had a good event including the 4th quickest swim time of the day to finish in 17th place with a time of 50.54. Tim Earl who is currently training hard for an Ironman distance event in the summer showed good speed to finish in 8th place overall with a time of 48.04, including the 5th fastest run time of the day. This time heading up the Rock Estate team was Mark Drake who surprised himself by finishing second overall (and now wishes he'd waited for the presentation before heading home) with a time of 46.05 including the 3rd fastest run time. After a solid winters training and investing in new equipment to try and buy his way to the front, Mark is hoping for more to come from the rest of the season.

Another excellent event for an early season opener to sharpen up the racing skills, it is recommended for next year.
